Port Logistics Professional

Ensuring Smooth Operations

Port logistics professionals ensure the smooth handling of goods in sea and inland ports. They coordinate the receipt of goods, storage, dispatch, and onward transport by ship, rail, or truck. Their tasks include receiving and inspecting general cargo and bulk goods, operating handling equipment, and organizing suitable means of transport. They plan loading operations, create loading and stowage plans, and secure goods for transport. The quality and quantity of goods are checked, freight documents are processed, and logistical data is managed in computer systems. The three-year training takes place alternately between companies and vocational schools, mainly in ports and terminal-adjacent businesses. Fundamental logistical processes and specific port operations, including technical terms and markings, are taught. Container inspection, the organization of storage and onward transport, and the handling of conveying equipment such as cranes or container bridges are also covered. Port logistics professionals require a sense of responsibility, teamwork skills, quick comprehension, assertiveness, and resilience. IT and foreign language skills, as well as a willingness to work shifts and outdoors, are advantageous.
