Inland Navigation Captain

Full speed ahead!
The profession of an inland navigation captain offers a responsible and varied career on the major European rivers, canals, and inland lakes. Upon completing their vocational training, trainees acquire the Union Patent, which certifies their qualification to operate an inland vessel on most European waterways. In their role, they safely navigate and maneuver vessels through various waters, relying not only on modern navigation systems such as radio or radar but also on landmarks along the banks and detailed maps.
Together with your crew, you ensure that the ship’s equipment and operational technology are always functional. Should problems or damage occur to machinery and systems, you analyze them and initiate appropriate measures for their maintenance and upkeep. You also plan and supervise the loading and unloading of the ship, whether for the transport of goods or passengers. As a captain, you are always responsible for the safety of everyone on board, both guests and crew. This also includes ensuring sufficient provisions and the cleanliness of the entire vessel.
What comes next?
Inland navigation captains primarily find employment in companies involved in inland waterway freight and passenger transport, in port operations and authorities, as well as with waterway and shipping offices. Their workplaces range from cargo ships, ferries, and cabin and day excursion vessels, to the wheelhouse and passenger areas, as well as engine and cargo rooms. They also often work outdoors on deck.
